Obituary

Lois J. Mathews was born February 22, 1937 in Durant, OK to Walter and Lorene (Dyer) Adair: with an older brother, Jack Adair. She passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Sayre, OK at the age of 80. Lois went to live with Grace and Arthur Coates at the age of 4 in Geary, OK. She was very close to her sister, Mildred Owings, daughter of Arthur and Grace Coates. Lois graduated from Geary High School in 1956 serving as homecoming queen while Buddy Mathews served as football captain. She played cornet in the high school band following in her brother Johnny Coates' footsteps. She helped keep Arthur and Grace's house and helped cook as they worked in the bakery. Arthur would on occasion, lock his keys in the bakery, and he would get Lois to shimmy her way in to unlock the door. At the end of the month, Grace would take Lois around to each business/ person to collect what was owed to the bakery. She married Buddy Mathews and to that union was born two children, Michael and Tammy. In 1982, Lois moved to Sayre, OK to help her son and daughter raise her granddaughter, Meagan. Lois worked as a housewife and mother raising her children and granddaughter, Meagan. After moving to Sayre, she worked as a Nurse's Aide for Dr. Buster's office in Cheyenne, OK. She loved keeping house so much, she owned and operated her own house cleaning service. Lois loved her children and granddaughter more than life itself. Lois loved gardening, raising roses, loved pets, especially her beloved dog, Lulu.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Arthur Coates, and Walter and Lorene Adair, her sister, Mildred Owings, and her sister in law, Enide Adair.

Survivors Include: her son Michael Mathews, her daughter, Tammy Mathews, and her granddaughter Meagan Mathews all of Sayre, OK; her brother, Jack Adair of OKC, OK, her nephew, Jeff Adair and family, her brother, Dr. John Coates and wife Mary of Tulsa, OK, and her dog, Lulu, as well as many other relatives and friends.
